I won't go into details on how i ended up as a drop out. Suffice it to say it was a very long hard fought battle and obviously i failed. That was eons ago, or so it seems to me. Now i'm married and have a kid. I have the motivation, the means (which i didn't have much of back then) and the maturity to complete my studies. I am highly interested in pursuing a career in translations and checked out formal studies related to it in the country of my husband. I found out i have a talent for learning foreign language quite fast and good but it's still not enough to make a good translator of a secondary language. Everybody is entitled to one mistake they say, but my one big mistake keeps haunting me back and is also keeping me from moving on and becoming a better me. What should i do? Are drop-outs really doomed in the academic world already? Are my dreams of pursuing higher education (masteral) doomed to remain as they are, a dream? Should i resign my fate to being a good housewife?

Of course there's hope!  People go back to school after dropping out ALL the time.  Call and speak with an adviser or admissions counselor at a school you'd like to attend, they'll be able to answer all your questions.

Best of luck!

Being a college drop out doesn't make you any less than those who have a phd. It's brilliant you have the motivation! It is encouraged that you go out and learn. Since you're interested in learning foreign languages, and you have the talent, you should definitely pursue it. In fact, this time of age, everyone wants someone who know more than one language. More than two is a plus! And yes, don't just stop at masters, pursue a phd if you life. You will feel better about yourself and you will set a good example to women out there that you came back and did it! Remember, learning never stops. Good luck!

Absolutely not, you can go back to school and receive a degree in a language.  You can take night courses, enroll full time or even take online courses (most at your convenience).  Some people enroll in med school at age forty, there is no reason to let a past mistake hold you back from pursuing your ambitions.

Hope this helps Smiley

You should have plenty of hope.  You might not have had great chances a year or two after you dropped out, but admissions people will usually recognize that sometimes people make mistakes and/or just aren't ready for college at 18 or so, but that those who become interested again as adults are usually more than capable of doing just fine.

There's usually some kind of "why I want to do this and think I will succeed" section to write up when you apply, and I'd think you probably can write a really good little statement.  Tell them that, yes, you were in college before, you dropped out because that's what you needed to do at the time, and you now feel like you're actually ready now after you've matured and handled your current responsibilities.  People change as they get older, and that's been good for your potential as a successful student.
